Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur – In Person & Online

September 24, 2023
6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Our theme for this year is Or zarua la-tzaddik u’l-yishrei lev simchah /  Light is sown for the righteous person, joy for the upright of heart.

Our Yom Kippur services are dedicated to the memory of our own tzaddik/righteous person, Rabbi Richard Ruth, and the causes that were dear to his heart.  On Yom Kippur we’ll focus on LGBTQ+ issues.

Kol Nidre:  The Kol Nidre prayer will be sung by our Kol Amite vocalists and played on the cello.  The musical evening service that follows is led by Rabbi Gilah and Lee Ann Hopkins, who will speak on LGBTQ+ topics — the multiple genders recognized by our Jewish tradition and the challenges facing members of the LGBTQ+ community.  The service will be in person and livestreamed.

On Yom Kippur morning, Rabbi Gilah and Rachel Friendly will co-lead our morning service; we’ll be in person and on Zoom.  We’ll be reading the traditional Torah passage about the scapegoat ritual, and discuss the issue of scapegoating in our society.  Yizkor will be led by Lance Feiner and Rabbi Gilah.  During the afternoon hours,  we’ll have an interactive session on the Book of Jonah.

The closing service, Neilah, begins at 6:30, led by Jane Petkofsky, Jane Schulman, and Rabbi Gilah.  Join us for this contemplative ending to the High Holidays, the final shofar blast at 7:30, and a community potluck break-the-fast.
